On the Big Island of Hawaii, you will find a unique guided tour for exploring part of the Kazumura lava tube system that stretches some 36 miles from the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to the Puna Coast. This lava tube system “holds the distinction of being the world’s longest and deepest lava tube system.”
There are two tours offered with Kilauea Caverns of Fire:
- A scenic walking tour that takes around just over an hour. This tour is described as “safe and easy” and cost $29. You must be able to negotiate uneven terrain and climb steps.
- For the serious spelunker, there is a 3+ hour tour that requires excellent physical fitness as you will have to jump from boulder to boulder and clawl on your stomach through 24-inch high spaces. This tour costs $79.
Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi at the Star Bulliten has written a great article about this tour.
