On Again, Off Again Hawaii Superferry Back On Again

Note: Hawaii’s Superferry system was closed down. See our guide to Hawaii’s inter-island travel for alternatives for getting from island to island.

First the Superferry launched at the end of August, then it met protests that halted operation.  In early October, the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that an environmental study would be required and the inter-island ferry system could not operate until the study was complete.  Now less than a month later, the Hawaii House of Representatives voted 39 to 11 in favor of allowing the ferry to operate during the study.

According to the Associated Press, service could resume “in about two weeks” and one-way tickets would cost between $39 to $79.  The superferry’s website indicates that they are not currently taking reservations.  The ferry will make one trip from Oahu to Maui and back  and one trip from Oahu to Kauai and back per day. To learn more about the Hawaii Superferry service and to sign up for their newsletter alerts, visit www.HawaiiSuperferry.com
