Fresh Shrimp from an Oahu North Shore Shrimp Truck

Romys Giant Prawns

If you are looking for a unique alfresco dining spot on Oahu, then look no further than the shrimp trucks of Oahu’s North Shore. You’ll find several colorful shrimp trucks and huts along the makai (ocean) side of Kamehameha Highway in Kahuku. Some of the shrimp are cooked in a heavy garlic sauce, so depending on how the wind is blowing, you may actually smell the shrimp trucks before you see them. 🙂

We stopped at Romy’s Shrimp Hut and shared the enormous shrimp in the photo above. That was an “upgrade” for the extra large prawns. We paid around $18 for this plate of shrimp and drinks. There were picnic tables and a place to wash your hands. (You’ll definitely want to wash your hands.)

  1. That’s not a Photoshopped image either. Those prawns have to be almost 10″ long. If one of them had moved, I would have swam back to the mainland!

  2. I was just about to ask if they were photoshopped! Holy Cow! er Shrimp! I don’t like shrimp. My husband LOVES them though, so we made several visits to the shrimp trucks. I would get my Matsumoto & he got his shrimp. We somehow missed these. Wait till I show him this pic!

  3. Lissete – LOL! Those were giants, but to be honest, I’d prefer the yummy Matsumoto shave ice over these giant prawns. I have a big sweet tooth. 🙂

Asia Destinations – I hope I the photo didn’t make you too hungry. 🙂

  4. UPDATE. I showed him he picture and he said that they were sort of scary looking. Shrimp on steroids. He says that he will stick to the garlic smothered ones without they “face” still on them. 🙂

  5. Hi Sheila,

Those look like ‘jumbo shrimp’ (oxymoron). Now that you posted that photo it looks like I’m going to have to go there for lunch today (it’s only 2 miles from my house). They offer a free plate for every 10 plates purchased. I have 2 cards almost filled out so far.

I must be getting used to the garlic because I can barely smell it anymore.

Romy’s has the best fresh shrimp, the other nearby restaurants and stands use mostly shrimp that has been frozen. Their stand is right next to the shrimp pond, you can’t get fresher than that.

  6. @ Lissete – Your update CRACKED ME UP!!! That’s just too funny!
    @ Chris – please don’t make me jealous. 🙂

  7. HVG – LOL – I’ve not had breakfast yet and looking at the photo has made me think “mmmmm”. 🙂

  8. We are in Oahu right now (staying at The Estates at Turtle Bay- per one of your posts) and tried both Romy’s and Giovanni’s – our winner was Giovanni’s – the garlic shrimp was superior! I did perfer that Romy’s had the brown rice option, but the shrimp were better at G’s… Love this site and all the great recommendations. We have been using lots of them on our trip.

  9. Hi Liz – Thanks for taking the time to share your North Shore shrimp truck review while you are on vacation! I’m so glad to hear that you’ve found the tips at Go Visit Hawaii to be useful! Thank you for that feedback. Enjoy Oahu!

  10. I see that these comments were made 10 yrs. ago. We are heading to Oahu in May & I was hoping there might be some more current recommendations or additions? We did try some shrimp trucks on our last trip – I think that is why we booked a 2nd trip – can’t wait for some great meals!
