A reader from Maui sent me a news tip that road closures are planned at Haleakala National Park road for the dates of January 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 20. I was able to confirm these closures with the staff at Haleakala National Park. The closures will occur between the hours of 10am and 5pm only. You will still be able to drive to the summit to see sunrise, however, you will need to make sure you drive out before 10am or else you’ll have to spend the entire day at the summit area.
The reader also informed me that the road between Hana and the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park will also be closed on the dates of January 6, 7, 8 and 10. So, try to plan around these days for driving the road to Hana and getting over to see the Oheo Gulch (also known as the seven sacred pools).
The roads are being closed for repair work. Mahalo to RW for this news alert!

Perfect. Those were the dates I was planning to go too. Arg!
Hi joe – darn it! Didn’t part of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park close part of the park right before you were headed there, too?
The Maui Newspaper has reported little more info….
