Waimea Canyon Drive – A Winding Wonderment

Winding Waimea Canyon Drive

As I was looking through our photos from our last visit to Kauai, I had to pause when I saw the above photo from Waimea Canyon Drive.

Here’s another photo that we snapped while on the move. Doesn’t it looks like you are going to drive into the sky?

What vista’s will you see as you climb this road?  Well, here’s just one of the photos of the canyon from our collection. Notice the thin waterfall dropping into the canyon.

Waimea Canyon

A visit to Kauai is not complete without seeing Wiamea Canyon. So, do place it high on your vacation sight-seeing plans and be sure to reference  my tips for visiting Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Parks.

  1. Oh I want to visit Waimea Canyon someday. It looks spectacular from the photo. I would love to visit Kauai and see the many wonderful places it has.

  2. I LOVE winding roads. This post made me think about our road trip in the Swiss and French Alps a couple of years ago.

  3. We went there while on our 2nd trip to Hawaii. We went and watched the sunrise. It was so beautiful.

  4. Visited there about 2 weeks ago. We drove it, and flew over it in helicopter. It was awesome from both view points. I wish we would have had more time to set at the turn outs and just enjoy the view – it was spectacular….

  5. @ a maui blog – you should plan a vacation to Kauai, if you can tear yourself away from your lovely home of Maui. :-)Kauai really is quite a bit different from Maui in terrain. It’s also a little more laid back than Maui.

@ Erica – Very interesting – I never would have made that connection of winding roads in Kauai and the Alps. The drive up Waimea canyon is only about 20 miles to an elevation of about 4,000 feet above sea level, which I’d imagine is quite a bit less than climbing the Alps. Both are very, very beautiful, though.

@ Tanya – I bet that was amazing watching sunrise over Waimea Canyon. I’d love to plan to do that on my next trip to Kauai. Thanks for the idea!

@ Brett – I’m glad you got to see Waimea Canyon by helicopter and on the ground. (Kauai is my favorite island for helicopter tours, by the way.) If you have the opportunity to return, there’s a great trail that goes into the Canyon that I highly recommend. Did you by chance see rainbows around the canyon on your helicopter tour?

I don’t know if we were just lucky or if it’s always like that, but we must have seen about 5 or 6 rainbows on our helicopter tour. Here are a couple of photos:
