Earlier in our series, we looked at Hawaii’s five counties. That was when some folks heard of little Kalawao County for the first time. Perhaps one of the reasons Kalawao County is not more commonly known, is that Kalawao is the smallest county in the United States. As you may recall, Kalawao County is the the northern peninsula on the island of Molokai. This peninsula is only 13 square miles in total land mass.
Though Kalawao is the smallest county in size, I thought it was interesting that it’s not the smallest in population. Kalawao County’s 117 residents makes it the second smallest county in the country by population. Loving County, Texas holds claim to fame for being the smallest county in population. Would you believe Loving County only has 67 residents? Whoa, and we thought Kalawao County was small!
