Most folks probably think that the Florida Keys are the southernmost point of the 50 United States, but actually Hawaii’s Ka Lae holds that claim to fame. Ka Lae is the southernmost point of the Big Island of Hawaii. You may also hear Ka Lae by the name of South Point.

Interesting view on the map. I knew Hawaii was further south than most of the mainland, but I had thought it was a lot farther south than is shown here. I guess that must be my biased from living all the way up near 42*N latitude in Chicago.
Kris – I’m with you, I expected it to be much further south. Now I’m wondering how accurate that map is. I’m guessing it’s close but not 100% accurate.

It is because the eart is round — compare the latitude lines of Florida and Hawaii – it is much further south than it looks.
