Mahalo to John Irwin from Dunedin, Florida for sharing this cool honu photo with us for Aloha Friday Photos. Here’s what John tells us about this photo:
There’s a beach on the north shore of Oahu aptly named Turtle Beach. Stopped there once and a bit of a crowd had gathered around this one massive 250 lb Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle. There was a volunteer there to keep people a few yards away. This little fellow was a regular beach visitor called Wooley Bully who like to bask in the sun most afternoons before slipping back into the Pacific before dusk. Wooley didn’t seem to mind all the attention, he moved his flipper occasionally but mostly he was just chilling. I remember getting a parking ticket after just a short time there but I felt it was a small price to pay.
John also shared this info about Wooley Bully.
As John mentioned, it’s important to keep a distance of 10 or more feet (3 meters) away from sea turtles to allow them their space and safety to rest. These green sea turtles are designated as threatened species.
Happy Aloha Friday!
