Tara took this photo on Maui at the Haleakala volcanic crater that stands over 9,500 feet above sea level. (The summit reaches 10,023 feet above sea level.) At this elevation, the temperatures are significantly cooler than down at the beach levels. Per Haleakala National Park’s website, there’s usually at least a 20-degree (F) difference.
The landscape at the summit is quite a contrast to the lush, tropical climates of Maui. (See our article comparing the two sides of Haleakala.) As you can see from Tara’s photo, this summit crater looks like a desert. Isn’t it interesting, though? The colors of the volcanic formations, sands and soils along with the sparse dots of green shrubs and plants make it an unusual and fascinating landscape to see!
We have enjoyed multiple visits to the summit of Haleakala. Ideally, we recommend visiting to experience the spectacular sunrise.
