Aloha Friday Photo: A view of the USS Bowfin in Pearl Harbor

Mahalo to Bruce Campbell for sharing this great photo of the attack submarine USS Bowfin for Aloha Friday Photos.

The Bowfin first went into action in the Pacific on December 7, 1942, exactly one year after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was nicknamed the “Pearl Harbor Avenger.” Today, the Bowfin rests in Pearl Harbor and welcomes visitors in for a tour.

Bruce was kind enough to share his experience as he visited Pearl Harbor and snapped this photo.

“This photo was taken of the USS Bowfin on the morning of May 23, 2022 at 8:07 AM as my wife and I were standing at the Remembrance Circle near the USS Arizona anchor. This was our first visit to Pearl Harbor and the Pearl Harbor Visitor’s Center. Both of us were so moved by the events that happened on December 7, 1941, we both started to cry while overlooking the harbor at the Arizona, Missouri and the Bowfin. What a price that was paid for the freedom we enjoy today!  I cannot begin to describe the emotions I felt that day.  Some day in the future, Lord willing, we both would like to return.”

It’s not unusual to have a similar emotional experience when you visit Pearl Harbor. I tear up every time I visit.

Tomorrow, December 7th, is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. With solemness, we reflect on that day “which will live in infamy” as President Roosevelt proclaimed.
