Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational surfing contest is on today and how to watch from afar

Today is a very, very special day in Hawaii. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational surfing contest is ON for Waimea Bay. Organizers have been closely watching the ocean swell forecast for days with the anticipation of the extraordinary wave conditions will be met for this tournament. Since its beginning in 1984, the wave conditions have only been met ten other times.

Experts are are calling this day “historic” and “incredible” and “surreal” with the potential for 50ft and some even anticipating enormous 60ft (!) wave faces. They’re also anticipating the potential for barrel waves, which is unusual for Waimea Bay.

The competition starts at 9:00 a.m. Hawaii Time. The peak is expected to be between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. To watch this amazing surfing competition live, you can tune into the Rip Curl YouTube channel.
